Q&A with Scott Butler, Alumnus of the College of Agricultural Sciences
Why do you love OSU?
Oregon State has been part of our family life as long as I can remember. My Dad was an Oregon high school educator and a loyal Beaver fan. My earliest memories included trips to Parker Stadium and Gill Coliseum to watch the Beavers. I came to OSU without really knowing what I would do with my education. I quickly learned about the Food Science program, and I soon was able to focus on what I wanted to do as a career. OSU really set the foundation of what was possible for me as I began my journey in the food production industry. Later, I was thrilled that our son, Chris, chose OSU for his undergraduate studies in Fermentation Science and Microbiology, which has led to a career in the Oregon wine industry. Now, Chris’s wife is pursuing a PhD at OSU. OSU helped make this all possible. Our family is grateful that OSU offered these opportunities.
What inspired you join the ER Jackman Friends & Alumni Board?
A couple of years ago, we purchased a home in Corvallis after spending our post-OSU years in California. My wife, Debbie, and I were exploring areas where we could contribute to the local community. I had the opportunity to attend a couple of the ER Jackman Board meetings and was impressed with the passion of the Board and how ER Jackman supported the education of students interested in careers in agriculture and food production. ER Jackman was a place where we could give a little back to the College that was so important to our family.
Why is it important to give back to OSU students?
I have believed for
some time that working to produce high-quality, low-cost food was one of the most important things that a person could base a career around. The agriculture and food production industries need smart, well-educated people to support this important mission. To do that, we need to train and support the best and the brightest to join this endeavor. ER Jackman’s mission is highly focused on supporting students who will be feeding the world in years to come which is why I decided to join the ER Jackman team.
What’s your advice to others looking to get involved with OSU or the College of AgSci?
At the end of the day, education is a people business, and we need people with many different experiences to help guide and shape the best possible outcomes for the students who chose OSU and the College of AgSci for their education. It is important that those who have benefited from their OSU experiences to contribute in some way to the future of the institution and to current and future students. There are many ways to contribute, and your help is surely needed and appreciated.
